“Huye”: Nutopia’s First Video Single For Their Sophomore Album

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

2018 continues to show that it is a great year for Puerto Rico’s indie music scene. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 2015, alternative band Nutopia is ready to release their sophomore effort and to start promoting the project they released: the politically driven, yet danceable track “Huye.” Along with a visual piece directed by young filmmaker Eric M. Rojas, featuring lyrics which briefly touch on the current political and social status of Puerto Rico, the electronic-rock tune shows how the duo can comprehensively mix social consciousness content with an upbeat sound.

Slightly influenced by 8-bit music and highly inspired by electronic-rock, Nutopia’s  “Huye” is a great way to kick off 2018, and an even better method to promote their upcoming sophomore project. The single proves that the duo is exploring new sounds and that they aren’t afraid to touch on controversial subjects,  even if it’s on a surface level. In their new single one can listen to the duo singing about how difficult it is to cope with a political system, which focuses on helping their own. However, as the tune’s chorus states “Huye, Destruye, Construye, Influye” (Run, Destroy, Create, Influence), Nutopia urges their listeners to find solutions to start anew. Moreover, the video by filmmaker Eric M. Rojas, further enhances the band’s vision.

Fueled by pixel and electronic influenced graphics, Rojas’ video for Nutopia’s “Huye” features the politically driven message of the song being interpreted in the form of a dance performed by Angélica Del Mar and Kariel Díaz. The performance by the dancers presents the current struggles Puerto Ricans face due to the politicians in charge. Meanwhile, the video’s subplot shows what seems to be a revolutionary protest against the system. The story, juxtaposed with the band’s song, demonstrates Nutopia’s political and social commentary and what, hopefully, is a preview of the bigger concept behind the band’s sophomore project.

Nutopia’s “Huye” demonstrates their growth as a band. The duo continues to explore new sounds by presenting an electronic-rock single, which lyrically explores the current socio-political landscape in Puerto Rico. The visual by Eric M. Rojas further establishes the message Nutopia wished to convey with their song and reveals what might be the concept of the group’s sophomore album.
