On February 14th 2018, the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida had their lives flipped upside down. Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old student who had recently been expelled, shot and killed 17 innocent people.
Three days after the tragic event, Emma Gonzalez, a senior at MSD High School gave a speech at a rally that left listeners speechless. The speech centered mostly around gun control but she also made it clear that while she grieves for her classmates and teachers, she will take this event and turn it into something positive.
Gonzalez told the people at the Fort Lauderdale rally, “We are going to be the kids you read about in textbooks. Not because we’re going to be another statistic about mass shooting in America, but because, just as David said, we are going to be the last mass shooting.”
The day after Gonzalez’s tear-jerking, powerful speech, the students of MSD announced the March For Our Lives rally – where kids and families will take the streets of Washington, D.C., and other cities around the country to mandate that safety in schools becomes a priority. This rally will happen on March 24th and everybody is welcome.
Cameron Kasky, a junior at the high school, said “”Here’s a time to talk about gun control: March 24. My message for the people in office is: You’re either with us or against us. We are losing our lives while the adults are playing around.”
