1. Celebrating Holidays with treats
Going back 10 years ago, the day before my birthday was my favorite: spend all evening making delicious cupcakes, decorating them and tasting them. Then the next day everyone loved you for the treats and wished you endless “Happy Birthday’s.” Today, allergies and health restrictions limit what students can bring in.
2. Getting excited when these roll up into the classroom
Today most classrooms are equipped with built in projectors mounted to the ceiling, but just 10 years ago, pictures would be printed out on transparency paper. Educational movies were checked out in DVD or VHS form from the school library.
3. Vending machines around school and unhealthy school lunches
Cheesy sticks, nuggets, and vending machine snacks were all delicious, but the lack of nutritional value and the every growing waistband of children led to changes food wise within schools.
4. Cursive class
3rd grade was the year my school handed out cursive books and dedicated a whole class to teaching students letter by letter how to write in cursive. I was super excited to finally write my name just how my mother signed hers. But now, some schools have reportedly deemed teaching cursive unimportant.
5. Scholastic Book Fairs and Catalog
Once a month a scholastic catalog was given out to students. This is when I’d go home and beg my mom for every book in there, convincing her I’d read them all. My favorite thing I’d ask for was a PDA, for all my important events, dates, etc… (HA)
