Broke & Single Hacks for Spring Break

If anyone is unfortunate as much as I am, you’ll be spending spring break back home without a full bank account or love interest to spend your time with. But fret not, because there’s still a number of things you can do to keep yourself busy, and to make this break worthwhile. Take it from me, a professional single broke girl, to help you out. Here’s all the things you can independently do without spending a penny.

Netflix or Movie Marathon

You have an entire week to yourself, what else are you supposed to do than binge watch shows and movies? If there’s nothing you’re currently watching, start a new show. My top picks are definitely “The End of the F*ckin World” and “Black Mirror”, which you could definitely get through a season of in a week. Also, all Harry Potter movies can be finished within the week.

Start a New Hobby

Oh come on, it’s spring, and spring is the time for new beginnings. Start going on hikes, pick up a new book, create new drawings or paintings, do something fun you’ve always wanted to try but never had a week all by yourself to get done. Something I’ve done in my free time was discover a new band that I have never listened to or heard of before. You can watch all their music videos, listen to all of their albums, pick your favorite songs, and talk about it with others. It’s fun, provides you with something new to jam out to in the car, and can fill up a lot of time.

Get Ahead in Homework

This one only complies to nerds like me, who, when bored, just do extra work. Have a book you need to finish, exam coming up, or essay due eventually? Do it now. It might be difficult to pick it up at the time, but when you get back to campus and the semester picks up, you’ll be happy you aren’t weighed down with piles of assignments.

Walk Around Town

I know not all college students face homesickness, but you haven’t been home in a while. Depending on the type of place you live in, go visit all the old places you used to hang out at. Go to the mall, walk through local and not-so-local stores, see a movie, or go to a park. Anywhere you can relax and get out of the house for a bit.

Hang out with Friends

Your family members aren’t the only people you can hang out with because chances are your old friends are all going to be home at or around the same time. Throw a get together, or just hang out with some individually. This is the perfect way to see your friends and talk about how much you’ve missed each other, and if you find they’re too busy with work or other people or they’re not home, you have the free time to call or text them for hours.

Clean out Your Dorm Room

This is something I know I need to do. The weather is finally getting better on campus and your heavy winter coats aren’t needed as much, so pack a box or two of clothes and shoes you want to drop off at home. This is a better way to bring out all of your spring clothes and save some much needed space.

Spoil Yourself!

Eat chocolate, do face masks, watch your favorite movies, relax, take a bubble bath, and take care of yourself. It’s called spring break because you get to take a break from the hassle of college life, and enjoy yourself for once. Get enough hours of sleep for once, eat your favorite food, and value your life. Don’t worry, be happy.

Be creative.

Don’t let this be a boring week home where you just sit at home with your family all day for nine days. Set up a movie night, have a one day vacation, do fun things (like bowling or mini golf), and other things. You get to spend all year with your friends on campus, and only get to see your family every now and then, so make the most of it.

You see stories all over the place of awe-inspiring spring break vacations, of girls going to Europe and spending thousands of dollars to see the most beautiful parts of the world, or spending most of break with their loves and enjoying every second of it. Don’t let spring break be an forgettable time where you just waste away on the couch. Be safe, go party (responsibly and safely of course), and live it up.
