5 Best Bullet Journal Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Bullet journaling is probably the best self-care treatment in existence right now; it’s low commitment, therapeutic, and can result in really beautiful work. Just like writers’ block, however, journaling block puts a huge bummer on times when you need to create but just can’t find the ideas to do so. Well, we’ve selected the best journal ideas to inspire concepts or just give you easy projects to enjoy.

1. Magazine photos as backgrounds for pictures and text.

This is a personal go-to creative rut pick-me-up. First, you start off by flipping through a magazine or any other material with pretty views. I usually buy a National Geographic which will give me two months worth of scraps! Once you find a photo that is especially aesthetic or fits whatever theme your words/picture presents, make whatever adjustments you need so it can fit your journaling page. I just use tape for adhesive, but if you’re feeling freaky and to use some glue, go for it!

2. Picture and text-paired blocks

If actual descriptions of your day or any lengthy writing are just not in your cards today, then this idea was made for you. Take an even amount of polaroids, your magazine clips, or any photos you’re feeling. Even stickers work with this project if you feel like it. When placing them down, arrange them as if they were one of the two colors on a chess board. Once you’ve got them set up, pair each photo with a word or phrase in the space next to it. The fun thing about the text of this project is that it can be literally anything.

3. Flower Pressing

This idea is pretty self-explanatory and makes really refreshing designs. Get any time of delicate flower with the stem still on, secure it with one to two layers of tape, and press! I usually put my journal under my bed for the night to really make sure that flower is going nowhere. Once it is pressed to perfection, go crazy with designs or writing around it. Or even leave it as is. It’s all up to you.

4. A touch of color to minimal art

Coloring a whole design could get really taxing after awhile. One of the great things about minimal art is that it’s supposed to look barren but you still have the creative license to put in however much you want. One tip I have for this idea is to go bold with the color or go home. Use that extra vibrant pink to spice up your flowers, or the vivacious green for your cactus illustrations!

5. A good ole list

In this house, we stan lists! Writing about one category without going in-depth about your choices is the best way to get out of creative (and even academic) ruts! Write a list of your favorite cafes or songs at the moment, literally anything that will get those productive juices flowing! And, if you want, make it pretty with a color coating or a sticker or two on the page.

Creative ruts can be difficult, especially if you feel stuck in habit and patterns. With these journal ideas, however, you will be producing beauty again in no time. Happy Journaling!
