When you first walk into your dorm room it can be a little unsettling. Plastic mattresses, old dorm furniture, and cold tile floors are definitely not cozy room elements. To make yourself feel a little more at home, here are some tips and tricks.

Pictures from Home

The perfect way to feel cozy and at home is to have pictures from home either of your family or friends. You could either print some pictures and frame them or even create a string of polaroids. Keeping these pictures on your desk or on your wall will constantly remind you of your loved ones at home.

Wall Decorations

The dorm walls are usually not pretty. Nobody likes looking at a plain painted cinder block wall all day. An easy way to cover the wall is to hang up pictures and other wall decorations. Having these wall decorations can also add to the theme of your room!

Pillows

Another way to make yourself feel cozier in your dorm room is to have loads of pillows on your bed. Not only will you be overly comfortable, but the pillows add some more decoration to the room. Adding as much decoration as you can to the room will cover up that dorm room feel!

Rug

Along with dorm walls, dorm floors might be even worse. They’re cold, dirty and I don’t know anyone who enjoys living on a tile floor. Covering the floor with any type of rug elevates the coziness of the room to a whole other level. It’s a game changer, and you won’t have cold feet.

Plants

Having plants in your dorm room is a fool proof way of making your room feel more like home. Plants bring warmth and color to any room. Succulents are the best dorm room plant as they’re pretty easy to keep alive. You can also buy fake plants or flowers to add more decoration without having to worry about keeping them alive!

Scents

Candles are an amazing way to make any room feel overly cozy. Also having your room smell nice adds a great element to the atmosphere of your room. Since dorms usually ban candles, a wax warmer is the next best option (or just break the rules!)

String Lights

Dorm lighting is not ideal. Nobody likes those bright, fluorescent lights. String lights bring a much better ambiance to your room making the room feel much cozier and much more comforting.

Decorate for the Holidays

Decorating for the holidays is the ultimate way to make your room more like a home. Decorating your room not only makes it feel cozier, but it’s a really fun activity to do with your roommates. Time to get in the holiday spirit!
