Unfortunately, we are growing up through a changing time for the term “relationships.” We look back at our mom’s and grandmother’s generations to see how fun it was to be young and to simply fall in love with the one you were meant for. But, of course, our generation has to be different in the sense that falling in love is anything but easy. We are the generation of hookups, friends with benefits and just talking. The one we fail to do, as a generation, is actually date someone.

We see high school and college relationships, but what do the majority of students choose to do with their love life? Not date. Is it the problem of not wanting to settle with only one person when there are thousands within the college environment? Is it because we’re young and don’t want to settle at all? In my opinion, this generation needs to evolve back to our mothers or grandmothers generation. People actually had morals and values back then, and maybe relationships had nothing to do with ‘hooking up’ and friends with benefits.

Think about your personal past with relationships. What are you happy about, and what makes you upset? Write all positives and negatives from past experiences on a piece of paper, and as you move forward in the dating scene, look back at that piece of paper for your own advice on what to look for in a guy. I always tell my younger cousin that part of dating and growing up revolves around making your own mistakes and figuring out what kind of person fits you. Find early warning signs in men that may indicate they aren’t looking for anything but your body and listen to your brain.

Let’s be honest ladies, you are better than a hookup after a frat party. You are better than settling for friends with benefits. Truthfully, you are so much more than what you think you are worth. Value yourself and your body. Find that person willing to give anything for you. I promise, you won’t regret it.
