Is Szechuan Sauce Worth the Hype? We Found Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

You all probably already have heard: Szechuan Sauce has returned to your local McDonald’s!!! The famous sauce from the comedy series, Rick and Morty, made its original debut at every McDonald’s store in 2017. I didn’t get to try the beloved sauce last year, so when I heard about its recent comeback, I made sure to seize the opportunity to try it.

Before I got to try Szechuan Sauce, many of my friends already shared their opinions about it — some hated it, but some said it was okay. My expectations were already pretty low. Regardless, I wanted to see for myself.

And I did.

The verdict?

6/10. It tasted like a knock-off, vaguely “Asian-inspired” sauce. Honestly, McDonald’s Sweet & Sauce is WAY better. My friend who tried it with me for the first time described it as “underwhelming.”

Nevertheless, I’m glad I tried it, and I appreciate it for the novelty. But… I would definitely not eat it again. Let’s be real, nothing beats the classic combo of McNuggets and Sweet & Sour Sauce!
