The year of 2017 was quite the year.

There were upsides as well as there were many downsides, but thankfully we have books to help us cope with everything that went wrong. The person that made the most headlines during the year was President Donald Trump, and the majority of those headlines were not received positively. It got tiring to read all of those headlines.

The following books were some of the best we read during the year that made us clear our mind and forget for a while that we have a celebrity for a president.They made us laugh, cry and smile genuinely instead of just hiding the pain.

 

1. A Court Of Mist And Fury by Sarah J. Maas

A book where the girl saves herself and learns to love herself before she can love anyone else, as cheesy as it sounds.

 

2. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

The price of freedom means that you could die the next day with the first bite of food.

 

3. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

A true testament to sibling appreciation, compassion, genuine care and love in times of mystery and high stakes at a carnival.

 

4. Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass Book 6) by Sarah J. Maas

A story about healing, following two people with broken bodies and souls.

 

5. Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard

Your typical dystopia combined with X-Men.

 

6. Palace of Laughter by Jon Berkeley

Circuses and magic. What else can be said?

 

7. Geekerella by Ashley Poston

A Cinderella retelling + fandom = your geeky, nerdy heart’s dream come true.

 

8. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Girl meets boy, but neither have the time. That leaves just the sex.

 

9. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

A scavenger hunt with the six deadliest outcasts of the city. They’re unstoppable, but they might kill each other before completing their mission.

 

10. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

If you want to live life and see the world, you have to step out of your comfort zone—even if you’re allergic to the world itself.

Of course, books are not everything in life (although sometimes they could be), but they were a highlight of our year since they made us very happy in times of need and that is all we can ask for.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Josie is a senior in the UPR-Río Piedras campus, majoring in English Literature. When she's not on campus, you can find her browsing a bookstore (as if her TBR pile isn't big enough already!). Books and writing are what drives this girl--apart from fighting to destigmatize mental illnesses and raising awareness about the importance of consent. Josie enjoys traveling, bingeing on spicy food and a lot of sweets, blasting Bieber, and adding shows or movies to her Netflix queue that she'll never get to.
