Narcos

We all love a good criminal investigation drama, but it’s even better when it’s based on the truth. Narcos revolves around the cocaine trade in Colombia and (for the first two series) the notorious drug lord, Pablo Escobar. The first two seasons are a whirlwind, following the operations of Escobar and the people that oppose him, specifically the DEA. There are even some points where you feel sorry for Escobar, the head of the Medellin Cartel who caused the deaths of thousands with his criminal activity. The third and fourth seasons focus on the Cali cartel but are just as well done. Overall, a great series if you want to get swept up in the action but also learn a little about the interesting history of the Colombian drug trade.

Dexter

It’s not one for the faint-hearted but still an amazingly addictive series that will have you on the edge of your seat for all 8 seasons. Yep, 8! That’s a lot of procrastination time. The series follows Dexter, a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police Department by day and serial killer by night. Dexter is the ultimate antihero, hunting down murderers who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system. But the question that will have you in a cold sweat throughout is when will he get caught? It’s a seriously satisfying series that will make you a lot less sensitive to the sight of blood.

The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Similar to Narcos, this series follows true events that occurred in 1994 when Simpson, a famous American football player, was charged with the murder of his ex-wife and male friend. The series documents a dramatized version of the trial and the events that happened alongside it. With famous faces such as David Schwimmer as Rob Kardashian and John Travolta as a very weird looking Robert Shapiro (one of O.J’s lawyers) it’s not one to miss.

Luther

This series proves that no man could play a more bad-ass, obsessive and sometimes violent detective than Idris Elba. Elba received much critical acclaim for the 4 seasons and a fifth season has been confirmed for this year. Luther is a detective for the Serious Crimes Unit meaning he gets in deep with the most brutal crimes. Luther is dedicated to his work and occasionally becomes too involved with his cases, and this makes for a drama that really stands out from the rest as Luther regularly works around the law to be satisfied.

Peaky Blinders

Set in Birmingham in the aftermath of World War I, Peaky blinders also has some truth to it, using the name of an urban gang that supposedly roamed the streets of Birmingham and had razor blades sewn into the peaks of their flat caps to blind people, hence the Peaky Blinders. The main characters are the Shelby family, a criminal gang with the gorgeous Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) at the head. Throughout the series, it can be seen how many historical aspects such as the war and IRA affect the family’s criminal activities as well as their many enemies. The fourth series was released in 2017 so hasn’t made it onto Netflix as of yet, but there are 3 very addictive series for you to binge-watch until then.
