8 Reasons to Consider Graduate School in the UK

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

1.  It’s cheaper.

Arguably the most persuasive of these reasons.  As your undergraduate degree starts reminding you of those pesky student loans, a lower price tag is pretty darn tempting! According to Study Across the Pond, total living costs are approximately $16,000 to $20,500 per year while attending graduate school in the UK.

2.  Experiential learning

Just like one of the most popular reasons to study abroad while studying for your bachelor’s, the experience itself is a major selling point.

3.  Availability of travel

If you travel two hours in the US, you’re either in the same state or you may as well be.  If you do the same from the UK, you can be in Europe!

4.  Culture and History

Museums!  Ruins!  Literature!

5.  British accents

PSA:  There is more than one “British accent” and it’s more than the posh Oxford version.  Whichever version surrounds you at your school of choice, it’s probably a good (if less logical) reason to consider.

6.  Learning environment

Target Postgrad describes the general learning environment for UK study as “open and informal.”  “

You will be encouraged to follow your interests, ask questions and develop your own opinions, all of which will go a long way in preparing you for the workplace or for further research. The programmes are intensive, but that’s an advantage . . . .” –Target Postgrad

7.  Accelerated study

Many UK programmes are faster than those in the states, at a year or two on average!

8.  You want to

At the end of the day, this is your decision!  If you want to study in the UK, that’s a good reason to look into it.
