I Tried Microneedling to Get Rid Of Acne Scars, AKA Stabbing My Face With a Dozen Needles

Microneedling. Microrolling. Stabbing yourself in the face with a lot of needles. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a newer trend in the ~mainstream beauty~ world, and it’s an absolute favorite for many, especially the internet. Microneedling has tons of skincare benefits, and I wanted those benefits like, ASAP.

If you’ve watched Face Mask & Chill on our Instagram Story before, or read this series, you know a couple things about me. 1) That I’m willing to try basically any and every skincare trend, 2) that I have sensitive, combination, acne-prone skin, and 3) that my main goal when it comes to skincare these days is to get rid of old acne scars.

As soon as I learned about microneedling, I was instantly sucked in. So when Stacked Skincare sent me a Micro-Roller, it was pretty much the most exciting day of my life. Okay, it’s an exaggeration, but honestly, I was pumped. I started to seriously do my research, figuring out what to do (and what not to do) with a micro-roller, what other tools and products I needed to make it happen, and how to use the micro-roller without just destroying my skin.

So WTF is microneedling? According to Stacked Skincare, their “spiky wonder tool uses safe stainless steel needles to gently micro-exfoliate and creates the appearance of smoother, plumper, firmer-looking skin.” The Internet basically claims it’s a life-saver for people with acne scars who are sooo close to finally being over their acne if only those damn scars would disappear. Enter micro-roller, the magical guy who helps refresh your skin and get some new, flawless cells to the surface.

Here’s how it went down.

First, the preparation. Before you use a micro-roller, you want to make sure your skin is fresh and clean. I washed my face with my usual cleanser and let it air dry.

Next, I grabbed a serum. I went with one of my go-tos, the Noni Glow Face Oil by Kora Organics. It’s calming and gentle enough that I felt comfortable using it alongside a new, more aggressive tool. I pressed the serum into my clean skin with my finger tips, and then it was time to roll.

When it comes to using a micro-roller, you want to roll it over your face vertically, horizontally and diagonally. You can even roll it over your neck and lips. Pro tip: DON’T do this every day. Use three to five times a week max, and make sure you clean it in between uses with 70 percent alcohol so you’re not shoving nasty stuff into your skin.

Here’s what happened.

At first use, I was nervous. My skin was pretty red, and it felt more sensitive than usual. I washed it with a really gentle cleanser and avoided layering on any of my usual acids or more intense products. But as I continued using the micro-roller throughout the week, my skin seemed to adjust to the needles, and by the third use my skin wasn’t getting red at all. Instead, I was getting some serious glow, and my face felt more alive somehow. It basically looked like I’d had a dozen orgasms without the sex hair and sweat. The glow was real, you guys.

At the end of the day, I’m obsessed with this product, and will 100 percent be integrating it into my routine. What kind of sucks is that you’re supposed to replace it every month, but considering that I don’t get massages or facials or anything, I feel justified spending $30 a month on a product I’ll get multiple uses out of. It’s such a cool tool and I’m glad they’re bringing microneedling to the ~lazy gal~ who doesn’t have the time or money to pay a professional.

Try this, just make sure to do your research first, and find a serum that works with your skin’s needs! I’m p sure you won’t regret it.
