Butler vs. Purdue: Unpacked

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Butler chapter.

I mourned for a week, but I think I am finally ready to start to process the loss that plagued the Butler community this past Sunday.  I wanted this Sweet 16 more than I wanted my own Sweet 16. We deserved it damn it. We deserved it… Anyway, I have written this article to try and journal some of the thoughts I had during that game. Maybe y’all will resonate with these sentiments too. (Caveat: They won’t be in any specific chronological order).

  • I might be evil.

Let me start this off by saying I would never wish an injury on anybody. That being said, when I found out Purdue’s 7ft+ center, Isaac Haas, couldn’t play in the game I was kinda relieved. I hated that I was relieved, and I think it was ugly of me to find any amount of joy in another’s misfortune. But I did.  Soooooo. Yikes.

  • Y’all got another one?!

With Isaac Haas on the bench I thought we were in the clear when it came to 7ft+ Purdue players, but apparently not. Matt Haarms came out one whole inch taller and just as disruptive. Where do they find these guys??

  • Why y’all fouling so much? Why?

Freethrows are canceled for the rest of the year. Watching Purdue score point after point because of some silly foul tore at my heart.

  • THAT WASN’T A FOUL

Okay, I get it. Our team did foul some of those times, but there were other times where the refs were just being ridiculous. I’m not saying the refs were biased. But I’m also not not saying the refs were biased.

  • How many more three pointers is Purdue going to score?

I’ve never seen a team score so many damn three pointers like stop it. Every shot ain’t gotta be a three, chill out.

  • Yassss. Dunk on em.

Tyler is the Dunk King. When I saw him steal that ball and run it back for some easy points I could have cried. Easily my favorite part of the game.

  • Poor Kelan.

Obviously the whole team wanted this, and I don’t want this bullet point to seem like I am trying to lessen their desire and subsequent disappointment. However, I was just so sad thinking about Kelan Martin not going farther in this tournament. He scored 9 more points than Purdue’s leading scorer, Vincent Edwards, and just really deserved at least one more win before concluding his time at Butler.

  • Still love us though.

Yeah I was really sad when we lost. Like really really sad. But we’ll get em next time. And even though I will be a Dawg alumna by then I will still be watching and cheering our team on from the flip side.
