Wondering what Miranda from Sex and the City is up to now? Actress Cynthia Nixon, best known for her role as Miranda in SATC, just announced her campaign to run for the Democratic primary candidate for governor of New York, although she has no prior experience in the field of government. However, despite her lack of background, she does have 17 years of experience with activism for LGBTQ rights and education, two hot issues right now that she has a passion for.
It’s been a mix of responses about her decision to run. Some say that the people will want someone with more experience with working in government, while others say that they appreciate and will stand by her because of her dedication and knowledge towards the issues that mean the most to them. Personally, being from the Albany area of New York, I think anything can be better than where our government currently stands in the state with Governor Cuomo being governor since 2011. Cuomo has received numerous accounts of backlash towards his lack of attention to the issues that New York is dealing with and lack of attention to the people of New York.
Nixon is already doing a better job at being personable and really trying to connect to the people of New York. She frequently engages and sparks conversations on Twitter with people who report to her with questions and concerns or if they just want to talk. Glamour reported that her campaign seems a lot more modern and tapping more into how people feel, something people are expecting out of their candidates more and more.
Her campaign seemed really sudden, but she expressed that now just seems like the right time.
She told Glamour in an interview, “I think it’s the election of Donald Trump. I think it’s the defeat of Hillary Clinton. I think it’s what Bernie Sanders showed us is wrong with our party, and what we can do. What women did with the Women’s March knocked me out. It wasn’t just a day to scream and cry and to go home and forget about. It was a shot over the bow, like, ‘We’re here, and there’s a lot of us, and we’re not going away. You’re going to have to contend with us.’”
Nixon plans to hold her first campaign event in Albany where she plans to discuss school funding inequalities and wants to meet parents of school children from around the state.
