Lesson I’ve Learned In a Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

Winter has finally ended and spring is starting to bring me out of my slump. Maybe it’s because of mercury being in retrograde, but I’m feeling very reflective lately. I think about where I was year ago; a senior in highschool, so ready to leave and start my adulthood. I thought I had it all figured out, with a sure sense of myself. My first year in college has quickly humbled me. So as my freshman year of college comes to a close, here are some things I’ve learned.

You can find solace within yourself

During college you are constantly surrounded by people. Whether you’re in class, the library, or in your dorm, sometimes it’s really hard to find time for yourself. In high school, I found myself wanting to be out and social all the time. But now that I’m in college, being around peers in class and then having to come back to my dorm and share a room, that constant interaction with other people soon becomes exhausting. I’ve learned to appreciate every moment I have alone with myself.

A small friend group is a good friend group

Having many friends in high school wore me out. For me, most of my relationships weren’t very sincere. Most of the people I became friends with was because I saw them everyday in multiple classes or we’ve been friends since middle school. One thing I’ve learned is the larger the friend group the more drama it brings. Now, I have a small group of hand-picked people I call my friends and I’ve never been closer to anyone before.

What you say can come into fruition

I was a big believer of whatever will be, will be. But sometimes your dreams could use that extra help. This year I started thinking positively about the things I want. Who knows if speaking things into existence actually works, but the confidence I have from it going into situations creates a favorable outcome. Also, I started writing my goals down and making vision boards. This helps me keep track and stay focus on the things I want. This year I learned if I start believing in myself, the things I want will come to be.
