I just recently started to enjoy reading poetry. Before, it was just a unit in English class that I had to suffer through every semester, but now I find relaxation and words that speak to my very own life. I think I am finally able to appreciate how a mixture of words can have significant meaning in the lives of an author and their readers. Here are four poems that mean something to me.
1) “Milk and Honey”- Rupi Kaur
This poem comes from Kaur’s first book, milk and honey. This collection of poems is split into four sections, all depicting a time in the author’s life. This particular poem comes from the section titled “the healing”. To me, this poem is very important. It encourages the reader to keep going even when you feel like you can’t. Sometimes it’s that encouragement that get me through my day.
2) “the princess saves herself in this one”- Amanda Lovelace

This poem tugs at my heartstrings a little. The first time I read it, I had to re-read the words multiple times for it to really sink in for me. We’ve all lost people throughout our lives, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still with us. This poem helps me when I feel like these people are far away. These words always seem to bring them closer to me.
3) “heart lines”- Gemma Troy
This poem stands out and is important to me because meeting new people is hard. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had trouble determining what parts of my personality I can share with the people around me. I always thought that if people knew that one thing about me, I would scare them away. Turns out, that’s not always the case.
4) “Your Home/You’re Home”- Erin Hanson
This poem just makes me smile. It is so refreshing to remember that, no matter where you are, you are home. I also love how your home is built from everything that you are: your dreams, kindness, love. This poem makes me feel like I belong in the skin I was born with.
