Fashion Trends of the Past 5 to 10 Years

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

How many trends do we see come and go? Watching fashion cycle in and out has always been something that has been an interest of mine. How can one trend be so popular in this decade and disappear the next? Asking older folks about the trends of their time and exploring different trends of our generation is so intriguing. Here are a few trends that you might not recognize as trends, just because they are that well-known:

  • Skinny Jeans

We do not often think of skinny jeans as a fad or trend, rather a lifestyle at this point. Skinny jeans have made an appearance. From the ultra-tight men’s trousers in the 1800s, tight pants have certainly come a long way. Starting in 1915, close-fitting pants became more acceptable to throw on for certain occasions. Thus, the rise of denim and eventually the skinny jeans you see now!

  • Jumpsuits

The new norm for formal wear. Jumpsuits are a fairly recent fad but once you see a cute one, it takes all self-control not to go out and buy your own. Who would not want to wear a jumpsuit? It is ONE piece of clothing that makes for a super stylish outfit without too much effort. A few celebrities that have joined the jumpsuit bandwagon include Miley Cyrus, Blake Lively, Emma Stone, Kylie Jenner, JLO, Kim Kardashian, and Bella Hadid.

  • Leggings

Pair them with anything- leggings are a trend that is BOOMING right now. When you can buy brand new ones for only $3.90 at Forever 21, why not invest in a pair?! I do not foresee the legging trend dying off anytime soon. Being that this particular pair of pants are comfy and cozy, not just for dressing up, leggings will stick around for awhile.

  • Distressed Denim

Ooooooo. Ripped Jeans. Ripped Jean Jackets. Distressed Denim has taken on a whole new look in recent years. You can go from a few holes here and there to completely destroyed jeans, depending on what look you are going for. Ripped boyfriend jeans are something that you can pair with just about anything without going wrong, anywhere from a pair of heels to some converse.

  • Mini Skirts

Another piece that you can pair with just about anything. Mini skirts are a fun and cute thing to wear when you do not have to dress up too much but still want to look presentable.

I hope you all found these trends amusing or relatable. Maybe you even take part in most, if not all, of these trends!

Hi all, I'm Paige. You could find me outside or making art. I'm inspired to take on another semester leading a great group of girls at UK!
