On average, we individually produce 4.4 pounds of trash everyday, and eight million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean every year. That’s a lot of junk. With our constantly busy lives, it’s easy to gravitate towards accessible, disposable resources. While it’s simpler to grab-and-go, there are small switches we can make to ensure we help our ecosystem and marine life. With each conscious decision, we can drastically reduce our environmental footprint.
1. Reusable Straws
Although straws are technically unnecessary for beverage consumption, they can make sipping a more enjoyable experience. I don’t like large chunks of ice falling onto my face, so I bring my glass straw everywhere I go. You can also opt for stainless steel or silicone based on your preference.

2. Reusable Water Bottle and Coffee Cup
My reusable water bottle goes wherever I go. With plenty of hydration stations available on campus, it’s an easy switch to make from disposable, plastic bottles. Another trick is to use a reusable coffee cup or thermos for your morning coffee fill-up. Most coffee cups aren’t recyclable due to the wax coating inside. Bringing your own coffee cup can not only help the environment, but give you a discount at most coffee shops.
3. Metal Lunch Box and Utensils
Whether you’re someone who likes to pack their lunch or eat out, a metal lunchbox and portable utensils can be useful for you. Instead of using a restaurant’s plastic to-go container for your leftovers, bring your own. Having your own metal spork or bamboo chopsticks can also eliminate the use of plastic utensils.

4. Safety Razor
If you’re someone who enjoys a close shave, a safety razor is perfect for you. It’s simple to change out the blade, 100% recyclable, and much cheaper in the long run. A pack of 100 razor refills could cost as little as $6. If you want to opt for something more chic, Oui Shave is a company that designs safety razors for women. After all, safety razors aren’t just for men; however, it will take a bit of practice to get used to.
5. Menstrual Cup
Periods are already inconvenient, but on top of that, we need to purchase expensive menstrual products throughout the year. You can save money and reduce your waste by switching to a menstrual cup. Like the safety razor, it might take some practice to get used to. If the menstrual cup isn’t right for you, there are also companies that create reusable pads that are totally compostable.
