Sorority Recruitment: Insider’s Perspective

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

It’s that time of year when you’ll see groups of girls all wearing the same clothes with their hair and makeup done and screaming catchy chants. Yes that’s right, I’m talking about sorority recruitment. I’m going to relay to you what rush is like from a recruiter’s perspective.

Round One: Open House

Surprisingly to most, we are just as nervous for recruitment as the potential new members (PNM’s). We don’t know what to expect and have to constantly be thinking of creative ways to keep our conversations flowing smoothly with the PNM’s. This round is all about getting to know each other .

Round Two: Philanthropy

By this round, the nerves have subsided. The excitement is building after we have great conversations with girls. We share our philanthropy and hope to inspire the PNM’s to become involved with service.

Round Three: Sisterhood

This is my favorite round as a sorority woman because we get to talk about our sisters and what our connections with them are like. We dig a little deeper in our conversations this round to see who would truly be a good fit for our chapter.

Round Four: Preference

Pref night is all about ritual. We are sharing a very personal experience with the PNM’s invited to this round in hopes that they’ll find their home with our chapter. Sisters express their heartfelt stories about their beloved sorority to give the PNM’s a glimpse of the experiences they could have with us.

Bid Day!

Time to celebrate our new members! It has been a long process, but Bid Day is what makes it all worth it.
