One of Mayagüez’s most supportive locations for independent art is La Tertulia en mi Tierra. Across the years, the bar has been the host to a wide of variety of local bands, art exhibitions, performances, open mic nights, and poetry readings. Last Thursday, September 27th, served as another night for the community to come and express themselves while finding a few books to buy.

Organized by Editorial Pulpo and young poet Carlos A. Colón Ruiz, last night saw a small gathering of young writers and enthusiasts participating in a close, welcoming, reflective and fun poetry circle where everybody was encouraged to express themselves. Among the many who participated and attended the event were poets Camil Valentín, Xavier O. Aymat, Ismael “Topo” Santiago, Elisaura Vázquez Ayala, Fernando E. E. Correa González as well as photographer Adaira Rojas Santana and filmmaker Alejandro D. Orengo Colón.

In short, last night in La Tertulia en mi Tierra was a much needed night of poetry and free expression that saw a small part of the Mayagüez community come together to share words, art, laughs, and an overall great night.
