9 Types of Co-Workers We All Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

So you’ve started a new job, huh? Or maybe you’ve been working at your company for over five years… Either way, it doesn’t matter. You’ll still know these nine co-workers because you see and interact with them almost everyday. So sit back and relax because I’m about to analyze your workplace.

1. The Work Best Friend

You meet this co-worker on the first day of training and instantly hit it off. You start the job together, develop new skills together, and have deep conversations during work hours. You like each other and have similar beliefs and interests. However, despite your similarities, you do not hang out with this co-worker outside of work.

2. The Perfect Employee (#Goals)

This co-worker has been working for the company for longer than you have, and is truly great at what they do. They are always friendly, knowledgeable and approachable whenever you ask them for help. Your boss loves him or her and constantly gives this employee promotions.

3. The One Who Needs to Warm Up to You

You try to talk to this co-worker during your first week, but it’s no use. This person needs time (weeks, months, or even years) to warm up to you before they feel comfortable treating you as a colleague. Once they warm up to you, you feel a sense of relief.

4. The One That Doesn’t Do Anything

This co-worker is usually a self-proclaimed comedian, and does everything in their power to prevent themself from doing any kind of real work. From annoying other co-workers, handing off jobs and spending work hours outside of the workspace, this co-worker has done everything… except their job.

5. The Bossy One With No Power

You walk into work on your first day and this co-worker automatically assumes seniority over you, even though you’ve both been hired for the same position at the same time. He or she will tell you what to do and expect you to do it. This co-worker is secretly hated by other colleagues (and you).

6. The One Who Lifts

When this co-worker isn’t working, they’re at the gym. When they are working, they’re talking about the gym. They’ll invite you to the gym. They’ll teach you how to gym. You can find their protein bars on the staff kitchen counter, but you’re not allowed to have any. If you’re looking for their Greek yogurt, it’s in the fridge behind the grapefruit.

7. The One Who Just Doesn’t Get It

You’re not sure why this co-worker was hired because they do everything wrong and they never fully learn to do their job. You love them because they are kind, and can’t help but feel bad for them when your boss talks to you about their underperformance.

8. The Clique

These two or three co-workers seem to be inseparable and do everything together. From grabbing ice cream during lunch breaks, to Google-ing random stuff during work, they never seem to break apart or get tired of each other. You can be friends with them, but you’ll never be a part of their clique.

9. You

You. The only normal one… right? You are judgemental, awkward and you have previously been all of the above. Fortunately for you, you’ve had so many jobs that you now know your way around the workplace. Good luck to you!
