7 Things We All Did As Kids

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Growing up has definitely taught us the pleasure of sunbathing, binge drinking and a spendthrift ‘shop-til-I-drop’ lifestyle. But, what are the things we did when we were younger, that are just as exciting, yet perhaps more long-lasting due to our very inquisitive little minds?

  1. Scribble around with mom’s lipstick

Before we knew anything about makeup and how costly it is, lipsticks were just crayons. I remember, instead of doodling over my own face, I drew on my draft book a crimson cartoon bride. Deconstruction is in every child’s nature, although I probably wasted a week’s worth of income of mother dearest.

  1. Build in-door ‘houses’

With existing furniture, bed sheets, pillows and blankets, every one of us was an engineer; also a must-do when girlfriends came over. Throw in our favorite fruit roll-ups, fairy bread, Barbie and Bratz dolls, and an under-the-blanket party now begins!

  1. DIY our new drink

This is the first thing every kid would do to help deal with leftover food. Grab a cup, pour in the ketchup, cheddar, chicken soup, pepper, mayonnaise, food bits…absolutely everything available on the table. Tada, we made a new potion. Give it a try, Dad!

  1. Believe in Santa’s existence

We’ve all been bamboozled by fairy tales such as The Polar Express and In Search of Santa. We’d hang up stockings near the fireplace and prepare cookies and milk in the living room. The next morning, we’d go berserk with glee before wondering: how does Santa know I like Hot Wheels and Gundam?

  1. The ‘KEEP OUT’ sign

This was the only time we thought being alone in our little world was cool. Yet parents didn’t buy it at all, because they would still barge themselves into our rooms without knocking.

  1. Climb on top of monkey bars

How were you a real monkey if you didn’t play on monkey bars constantly?

  1. Pop bubble wraps

Admit it, you still do that!

Inside Stephanie's 5'2 body, there is a burning love for writing, photography and basketball. When she isn't doing any of those, she often ensconces herself in deep but random contemplation - the meaning of life - that feeds her own ego and keeps her energetic throughout the day. Her favorite movie is 'The Shawshank Redemption'; she hopes to become bold like Andy Dufresne one day and drive alone from Texas to Mexico in a convertible - once she obtains her driver's license.
