8 Things I Have Learned About College Since Starting

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utica chapter.

Now that I have made it a month through college, here are a few things I have learned.

1. It is okay to not know what is going on

Other people are more than likely feeling the same way, and all of the freshman are also trying to get the hang of their new schedule.

2. Your roommate and you will not be the same person

This was a shock to me, because when I first started talking to my roommate on Snapchat, it seemed like we were the exact same person. However, to my surprise, we actually are very different. I found that this works for the better because it is not always good to be the exact same.

3. 8am classes stink

I thought everybody who complained about having 8am classes were exaggerating. They are certainly not!

4. Not every club you sign up for is going to be a good fit for you.

5. It is not like high school

People are so much friendlier, and way more approachable! If you need help, you can ask someone passing by, and more often than not, that person you asked will help you out whether it be for finding a class or for getting the door when your hands are full.

6. Laundry rooms are always busy

If you do not stay on top of your laundry, you will find that it is piling up and 3 out of the 6 washers are broken. So, now you have to wait to wash your clothes until 11:30 pm when a washer finally opens up. Also, the dryers that are on top are the worst! You can’t see what you’re pulling out, and you basically pray you got all of your stuff out.

7. Things can get busy in the blink of an eye

There were some days where I thought I would have all day to get an assignment done, and then in the next minute I glanced at the calendar and realized I have an advisory meeting, a club meeting, and a floor meeting.

8. Dining hall food gets old very quickly

While there appears to be a variety of things to eat, I learned very quickly that I will be making it through the semester on bagels, salads, and ice cream.

Hi! I'm Amber, a freshman from Utica College majoring in Accounting (and hopefully marketing), I'll do my best to write about interesting things! My hobbies consist of shopping, watching Netflix, and hanging out with family and friends.
Meet Bianca, I am currently a Junior at Utica College in Utica, NY.  I am a Criminal Justice major with a concentration in Homeland Security.  Crime investigation has always been something that interests me.  I’m dedicated and passionate and it’s hard for me to quit things. I get that from my father so don’t hold it against me- he was a veteran and police officer for 20 years.   Growing up in a family centered around law enforcement has helped guide me in this direction, and I will forever be grateful.  After graduation I intend to continue on to law school where I can further my education in hopes of becoming a criminal defense lawyer and later on a District Attorney.  An interesting fact about myself is that I found the passion to be a criminal defense lawyer from watching the O.J. Simpson case.  The facts and conspiracy theories evoked a whole new passion behind criminal investigation that I intend to use in my future.  One of my most prominent moments in my writing career was when I wrote for an online magazine and had my most prevalent article hit 1.6k shares.  I believe in treating people with the same kind of respect and manners you would expect in return, and in a way it has helped shaped my expectations in life.   When you first meet me I won’t be the loudest in the room or the center of attention, but I will be intently listening to everything you say, for what you have to say may have a purpose. I believe in purpose. I believe that everyone is here to help you grow into who you are today and who you will be tomorrow.
