The Best Saturday Night Live Halloween Skits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Happy Spooktober everyone! Are you ready for costumes, scary stories, and candy galore? Well, I am for one definitely ready to celebrate this Halloween. Halloween has really turned into a month long celebration, since our generation seems to love Halloween so much. I mean, we even created the term Spooktober! In addition to all the typical Halloween love, I specifically enjoy many of the Halloween sketches that Saturday Night Live (SNL) airs on NBC. So, for all the SNL lovers out there, here is a list of some of the best Halloween skits that SNL has produced in no particular order.

“The Merryville Brothers: Haunted Castle”

This skit stars the famous Bruno Mars accompanied by Bill Hader and Taran Killam as animatronic singers in a haunted house amusement park ride; however,  it has a violent twist. The riders (Vanessa Bayer and Jay Pharoah) are stranded in the haunted house ride due to a technical malfunction, and the animatronic singers turn their fun tune into violent threats towards the riders. Click below to get some twisted laughs in.

“Kellywise”

*warning* This skit is a parody of the movie ‘It,’ so please do not watch if you have a fear of clowns or of that movie in particular. However, if you do not, please watch this hilarious, super creepy parody of ‘It’ combined with satire about Kellyanne Conway (Kate McKinnon) and Kellyanne, or in this skit “Kellywise” tries to lure Anderson Cooper (Alex Moffat) into the sewer with promises of crazy stories in order to be featured on CNN again. Click below to find out if Mr. Cooper falls for her promises or stays strong.

“Weekend Update: Two Teenagers Dressed as Werewolves”

This skit features Seth Meyers interviewing two teenagers (Drake and Jay Pharoah) dressed as werewolves. It is not that hilarious, but it’s still a pretty funny skit that includes a rap made by the two teenagers who don’t trick-or-treat but instead bag jack candy from innocent children. Although it has a bit of dark humor, it can still get some laughs from viewers. Click below to listen to the rap you can use if you, too, are a teenager and like to bag jack candy from children on Halloween.

“Vincent Price Halloween Special”

This may be an older skit, but it remains a classic among SNL fans. It’s 1959, and Vincent Price is attempting to host a Halloween party with Gloria Swanson (Kristen Wiig), James Mason (Jon Hamm), and Liberace (Fred Armisen) that turns wild, as those Price invited over tend to be a bit eccentric (but weren’t most people from the 50’s?) Click below to see the cast of this skit make you laugh so hard, you wish you were invited to another Vincent Price Halloween Party.

And, if you liked that one, click here to view “Vincent Price Halloween Special II with JFK,” just as fun and hilarious as the first.

“Firelight”

Okay, this one can be pretty funny if you like parodies of Twilight. This SNL Digital Short, instead of vampires, features Frankenstein (Bill Hader) and his complicated relationship with Bella (Taylor Swift). Some other cast members play Bella’s friends and the family of Phillip, called “the Franks,” and there’s even a feature of Andy Samberg teasing you to think the parody will be about vampires at first. Click below to see how Twilight would have been with the focus on Frankensteins versus vampires.

“Most Haunted”

This SNL Digital Short is pretty hilarious in a middle school reminiscing way, as in fart humor. The reason it’s so funny here is because the fart is thoroughly investigated by paranormal ghost hunters (Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen) that do not realize the sound was just a fart from the lead investigator (Hugh Laurie). Therefore, they do as ghost hunters do and fully investigate and listen to the sound over and over and over. Click below to see how the lead investigator handles his fart being scrutinized.

“Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins)”

This skit is by far my favorite. I don’t know why exactly, but this skit makes me cackle every single time I watch it. I think it’s the pure random comedy that’s happening and making you go, “What the f*ck?” each time. On top of this popular skit, SNL created a whole animated short you can watch on Hulu call “David S. Pumpkins” animated short.

If you loved all these skits, feel free to explore SNL’s YouTube page, or a playlist of some of their most popular Halloween skits. Happy Halloween!
