Spooky Season is finally here, which calls for a celebration of epic proportions. By that, of course I mean rewatching the best Halloween movies that Disney has to offer: the Halloweentown series. Halloweentown, Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High and Return to Halloweentown are four made-for-tv movies released by Disney Channel over the span of almost a decade, and they are the absolute gold standard in all things Halloween. If you want, you can watch them all back to back in roughly five and a half hours, or you can just watch one a night; that’s cool too. Regardless of how you choose to space them out, here are some reasons why it is absolutely vital that you revisit Halloweentown.
Â
1. Marnie Piper is my hero
From the start of the very first movie, Marnie establishes herself as a strong, independent woman who isn’t afraid to pursue her dreams. She’s a natural-born leader, and I honestly found her courage and tenacity inspiring. She was even willing to go through a stranger’s socks to save her community! We should all try to be a little bit more like Marnie.Â
2. There’s a lot of character development
Some might even say too much (that’s right, I’m subtly referencing Marnie’s recasting for the fourth installment of the series), but with that aside, Halloweentown basically has it all. Marnie has to navigate relationships, high school and some truly unfortunate fashion choices. By the end of the series, Marnie, Dylan and little Sophie have all grown up.
3. You can practically drown in the nostalgia
Is there really anything better than revisiting a favorite childhood movie? I think not. There’s even a Jesse McCartney song in the last one! His single “Right Where You Want Me” can be heard in the background as Marnie and a certain someone go on a very romantic broomstick ride together. Everything about the series screams the late 90s and early 2000s, and I don’t know how that could ever be a bad thing.
Final Thoughts
This was maybe the most revitalizing thing I’ve done all year. By the time the final credits rolled, I was ready for anything life threw at me: an evil warlock, weird curses that turn things monochrome or maybe just my upcoming midterm. Everyone deserves that kind of motivation for their life, so sit back, grab some popcorn, put on your favorite witch’s hat and relive the glory days. Â
