Sylvia Rivera was an LGBTQ+ activist who lived in New York City, New York. She was a trans woman who fought hard for the trans community to be included in the gay rights movement in the 1970’s. She was a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front, the Gay Activists Alliance, and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. STAR was incredible to many people as the organization acted as a shelter for homeless LGBT youth.
2. Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was a bisexual Mexican artist whose art still inspires many today due to its power and intensity. She used her art as an expression of the Mexican revolution as well as her disabilities and sexuality.
3. Shane Ortega
Shane is a Latinx two-spirit person who served three tours in the U.S. military. He was the first openly trans man in the military which started his career in activism. Shane was a key figure in the repealing of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and still fights for trans rights today.
Orlando is the only openly gay man who has won a world title in boxing. His openness about his sexuality has opened doors for inclusivity in the sport, and he continues to work as an activist for the community.5. Holly Woodlawn
Holly, who was born in Puerto Rico, is best known for her involvement in the Stonewall Riots and starring in Any Warhol films. She was a trans woman who hitchhiked from Miami to New York at 16 in order to escape her parents’ attempts to “correct” her gender non-conforming behavior.
6. Gloria Anzaldua
Gloria who was an intersectional feminist scholar and professor is most well known for her book Borderlands: La Frontera. She was a lesbian Mexican-American whose writings continue to influence scholars of Latinx and Feminist Studies.
Patricia is widely regarded to be the first lesbian Latina supermodel. She is best known for her work with Victoria’s Secret, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, and her role in 1999 blockbuster “The Mummy”. Patricia also had a recurring character during Season 5 of “The L Word”.
8. Felipe Rose
Felipe is best known for his role in the Village People which produced many gay anthems such as “YMCA” and “Macho Man”. After his time with the Village People, Felipe has raised millions of dollars for Native American causes and AIDS-related characters.
9. Emma González
Emma gained national attention this past year by speaking out against gun violence after her high school, Stoneman Douglas, was involved in a school shooting. She continues to be an outspoken activist and even helped to organize the March For Our Lives.
10. Stephanie Beatriz
Stephanie Beatriz, best known for her role as Rosa on “Brooklyn 99”, made headlines when she came out as bisexual. Her character Rosa also came out as bisexual which many saw as a great moment for bi representation.
