The 13 Best Psychological Movies to Watch This October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

October has arrived and it’s time to get into the spirit of Halloween. And while there is going to be list after list of the best horror films and Disney Halloween movies, I am here to offer an additional list of movies to enjoy during this spooky season. While some are freakier than others, the beauty of this list is to get you to explore movies that explore your mind!

Shutter Island

Not only does this phenomenal film star the gorgeous Leonardo Di Caprio, but it will also leave you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The mood, the visuals and the story line are insane — and the twists will leave your heart racing.

The Jacket

This movie is nothing but thrilling from start to finish. If you are due to have your mind blown, then this is certainly one for you.

Gothika

If you enjoyed The Call, then you will absolutely adore Halle Barry in this movie. This one is a little freaky and some of its themes are pretty brutal, but it is perfect for Halloween.

Donnie Darko

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of my top favourite actors and he definitely does not disappoint in this one. Following a young man who begins to see things, it’s up to you to figure out what the heck is going on by the end of all the chaos.

Nocturnal Animals

Unlike the previously mentioned films, this one is a little newer. And just as dark. It’s another one of those movies that keeps you guessing and engaged the whole ride.

The Black Swan

Personally, I loved this movie. I thought it was unlike any role that Natalie Portman has ever taken on and I thought she executed it perfectly. It’s dark, sinister and somehow lovely all at once — definitely worth the watch this October.

Seven

I don’t have much else to say other than WATCH IT. And there is a bonus: it stars Brad Pitt.

Memento

Chronological order isn’t everything: this movie proves that.

The Sixth Sense

Everybody is probably familiar with the infamous quote: “I see dead people,” even if you haven’t seen this. But if you haven’t watched it yet, you definitely should.

Gone Girl

I’ve read the book and I’ve seen the movie countless times. Neither disappoints.

The Girl on the Train

Emily Blunt was excellent in this movie. If you’re a fan, you definitely will not want to miss out on this one.

Prisoners

This movie was very deep and intense. It runs high on emotions and character development, with a fantastic plot to follow. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.

The Hannibal Series

Silence of the Lambs, The Red Dragon and Hannibal are one of my favourite series, ever. Everything about it is fantastic. I can’t boast about these movies enough. Watch it, seriously!

And while there are a ton of movies, I will finish my list here and wish everyone the most fabulous October yet!
