How to Dress for Fall When it’s Still Hot Outside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

October is the pinnacle of fall and all you want is to be wrapped up in a cozy orange sweater, sporting your favorite tall boots and warm knit hat. But unfortunately, the reality of living in D.C is that you’ll be fine in your quintessential fall look while walking to your 8 am, but by mid day you’ll be sweating gallons.

Obviously, it’s difficult to rock fall styles when it’s still summer weather, so below are some key wardrobe pieces that’ll make it just a little bit easier.

Corduroy and plaid skirts

So long as it’s still super hot outside skirt are the perfect solution for rocking the fall look and still letting your legs breath. The thicker material, color, and pattern gives you that fall vibe without burning you up. And as the weather starts to cool down, you can always pair them with tall boots and tights.

Short-sleeved knits

This tank is one of my favorite pieces to wear in September and early October before the temperature drops! The soft knitted material and neutral color gives you that cozy fall vibe without holding in the heat like a full-on sweater. Once the weather drops, a piece like this could also be worn with a stylish, earth toned jacket that would compliment the beige.

Gingham

Gingham is such a good pattern to have in your wardrobe because it’s so versatile. Personally, I wear this dress a lot during the summer, but because it’s a simple black and white pattern it’s also great for the early weeks of fall–just add a couple fall-colored accessories like a scarf or hair scrunchies. Deeper into the season, you could pair a piece like this with a big chunky sweater over it so the gingham peeks out like a skirt.

Light cardigans

This is my absolute favorite cardigan for fall! Not only does the color scream October, but it’s also completely wearable in all temps. Find a cardigan like this one that is super light weight and isn’t too chunky. I usually keep this with me at all times because it’s such a great, colorful layer that doesn’t burn you up.

Warm colors

This crop top is perfect for those super hot days in October because it will definitely keep you cool, yet still gives you a touch of fall with its warm color. Any top or blouse that’s a warm sunset tone is really great for this time of year and can easily be paired with one of the skirts listed above or a simple pair of jeans. Once it gets colder you can still wear these types of pieces with layers!

So with out further adieu, get out there and get styling! In spite of the weather, you’ll start feeling the fall spirit before you know it.
