In the past, singer Taylor Swift has not been vocal about politics, but this past week on October 7, she broke her silence in a lengthy Instagram post to her 112.4 million followers.
Posted alongside a simple black and white Polaroid photo, her words and the link to vote.org created a spike in voter registration. Precisely 65,000 people ages 18 to 29 have registered to vote in the 24 hours after her Instagram post was published. She states that “Due to events in the world and in her life,” she has decided to post her political opinions.

“I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me…please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.” –Taylor Swift
Her post not only inspired young voters but also educated her followers in the importance of researching candidates before voting in order to view what each candidate stands for. She finished her Instagram post by she shared her support for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for house representative running in this upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, agreeing that they represent her Tennessee values the most.
