The Hardest Part About Having Roommates

By Shelynn Handy

College comes with a lot of ups and downs. Sometimes classes are hard, or professors are difficult. Sometimes you aren’t getting enough sleep, or you don’t know where to eat because all the on-campus dining spots are closed. But I personally think one of the most difficult things about being in college is living with other people.

The thing that makes living with other people is difficult is the fact that everyone is different. Everyone has a been raised on a different way of living. Maybe your roommate’s standard of “clean” is different. Maybe your roommate doesn’t know that 45 minutes in the shower is a long time because they were an only child. With so many differences in one confined space, it’s natural to bump heads every once in a while.

The only way to really survive living with complete strangers is communication. You have to be able to talk about the things that upset you respectfully with the people that you live with and hope that they understand. You may not get your way all the time, but at the very least you can get a compromise. Maye you can get your roommate to cut their shower down to 30 minutes. You just have to be willing to communicate.
