Underrated Places to Eat in NYC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.

New York City is filled with so many restaurants that many of them do not receive the recognition that they deserve. I put together a short list of restaurants that I think need to be talked about more.

La Mercerie, SoHo

The first on my list is La Mercerie in SoHo. The best way to describe the restaurant’s aesthetic is a mix of French café and social media influencer that you want to trade feeds with. The café is a nice spot inside the Roman and Williams Guild store. You can have a nice meal, go to the flower shop inside and then go to the back into the furniture shop. As for the food, the Crêpe Complète saved my life. In fact, anything on the breakfast menu will make your life better so I recommend stopping by for weekend brunch.

Ugly Baby, Brooklyn

If you’re in Brooklyn with a few friends and want to share a large meal, make sure to stop by Ugly Baby. This Thai spot was even featured on Bon Appétit’s list of best new restaurants in America. When you sit down at your table, you will most likely be asked the level of spice that you want your food to be at. The spices here are no joke. I love spicy food but struggled with the dishes that packed more heat into them. They were painful to eat, but I would constantly want more because each dish was so good. At Ugly Baby, it is pretty easy to have a feast the size of a Thanksgiving meal on your table. It’s great for everyone to order a couple of different dishes and then have a free-for-all. The food and the fun ambiance will make this Thai spot a go-to with your group of friends. I highly recommend the Kang Hoh and Kang Kua Supparod!

Pies ‘n’ Thighs, Brooklyn

If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen Pies ‘n’ Thighs on my Story about a thousand times. Open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, Pies ‘n’ Thighs has a line of people waiting to try their mouth-watering fried chicken and some of the best pies in New York City. My first experience at this restaurant was a Sunday evening with my roommate after we finished an outing with Her Campus. This restaurant was on a list of places I wanted to go to for about six months, and I finally dragged my roommate all the way to Williamsburg for fried chicken. With her being from the South, I knew she would be able to determine if it was true Southern comfort food or not. Neither of us was disappointed. If you decide to take the trip to Pies ‘n’ Thighs, make sure to get the fried chicken box. This box comes with three pieces of fried chicken, a biscuit, and your choice of a side (get the mac ‘n’ cheese).
