As Gettysburgians, there’s no doubt that we’re fortunate when it comes to the dining options here on campus. Servo has seemingly endless options every day, including special sections for those who have dietary restrictions. However, dining hall food can get old. As a student who happens to be local, I’ve compiled a list of my top five favorite restaurants in the area. (And they’re all within walking distance of campus!)
5. One Lincoln
Located on the square, One Lincoln belongs to the Gettysburg Hotel. I prefer to have lunch here, since it isn’t typically busy and the menu is simple.
My go-to meal: Fresh Mozzarella Hummus Wrap
This particular wrap comes with chickpea hummus, mozzarella cheese, and roasted tomatoes and peppers. I highly recommend the side of waffle fries!
4. The Ugly Mug
On Carlisle Street, The Ugly Mug (affectionately referred to as “Ug Mug” by many students) has an impressive menu of coffees, teas, salads, and sandwiches.
My go-to meal: An iced coffee with hazelnut and the “Veggie & Egg” bagel
The veggie & egg bagel comes with cheese, onions, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. I substitute the egg for egg whites. (The other bagel and the horchata belong to a friend – I swear!)
3. Food 101
On the corner of Chambersburg Street, Food 101 serves gourmet American food; anything from salads to salmon ratatouille will satisfy the pickiest eater.
My go-to meal: The “Vegetable Powerhouse” sandwich with a side of fresh fruit
The Vegetable Powerhouse has roasted zucchini, squash, eggplant, red peppers, mushrooms, avocado, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, and a tomato aoili. It is served on a wheat berry bread – a vegetarian’s dream!
2. The Ragged Edge
Across from Food 101, The Ragged Edge is a seemingly simple coffee house that boasts a wide array of food and drinks. They have a tremendous variety of coffees, teas, salads, sandwiches, and desserts.
My go-to meal: Baked oatmeal
The baked oatmeal is topped with fresh fruit and served with a side of steamed milk, which makes for a nutritious and filling meal.
1. Gettysburg Baking Co.
The Gettysburg Baking Co. is located on the square. Here, you will find a wide selection of freshly-baked breads and pastries, as well as soups, sandwiches, and coffee/tea drinks. Everything from the bread to the syrups used to flavor the drinks is made by the owner herself.
My go-to meal: Avocado Tartine with a side of Greek couscous
The Avocado Tartine is avocado toast with a twist. Served on white sourdough, the tartine is topped with mashed avocado, tomatoes, a medium-boiled egg, salt, pepper, and a drizzle of lemon oil. The couscous is made Greek-style, with feta cheese and olives throughout it.
There you have it – my five favorite places to eat in Gettysburg! I challenge you to try each of these places, as well as to explore the rest of what Gettysburg’s food scene has to offer.
