6 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Date That Hot Guy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

As romantic as movies make it seem to fall in love with someone, it’s not always as easy as it seems. Dating is often a lot of trial and error. Here’s a few tips to help your dating life be less error and more successful.

Personality is More Important Than Looks

You hear it all the time, but it’s true. Although he may not be a model, personality goes a long way. Being with someone who shares your interests and can hold a conversation with you will be a lot more enjoyable than eye candy. Everyone finds different people attractive, and it is very likely that you could find someone who is attractive and interesting, but prioritizing looks over everything else might not be the wisest idea.

Dating Can Be a Distraction

We are all in college working hard to get our degrees. With clubs, homework, reading and much more, trying to maintain a relationship might be too much at the moment. Relationships take work and sometimes adding that to your plate can cause more stress than happiness. First year, Natalie Weber says “I already feel like I have way too much on my plate. Trying to maintain a more intimate relationship is more work than I can handle right now.”

You Sometimes Need to Focus On You

A lot of the time, girls want to be in a relationship for the cute Instagram posts and being able to find someone who will make them happy. However, the best person to make you happy is yourself. Focusing on yourself and being your best self can be just as great of an Instagram and Snapchat post. Another first year, Katherine Chong says “Having happiness within yourself is more fulfilling. A lot of people are on the path to finding themselves.”

He Will be Constantly Flirted With

Although dating someone who looks like Zac Efron might sound like a dream come true, it could quickly turn into a nightmare. If you notice his looks, you can guarantee that other girls will too. If you’re the jealous type, having other girls drool over your guy might be a problem. However, you might get lucky and find someone who only has eyes for you

He May be Too Cocky

Sometimes looks can get into people’s heads, and then confidence turns into cockiness. Although being confident in your looks is a great thing, someone who acts like looks put them above everything else and can get them anything they want is a bad sign. Patricia Austria, a second year said, “I once dated a guy who knew I thought he was cute, so he used it to get homework answers and class notes.”

He Focuses More on His Body

With looks, comes the job of keeping a pretty face and beach worthy body. A lot of guys take that to heart. Some even follow the GTL (Gym, Tan, Laundry) rule that is meant to make them productive everyday. Working out is great, but you might not want a guy who values his time at the gym more than time with you.

So no matter how tempting they are, remember that there are more important things than looks.
