5 Things to Do This Fall When the Weather is Terrible

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

We’re right in the middle of midterm season, and we are also unfortunately nearing the worst part of autumn. September and October are the pretty fall months, complete with bright leaves, crisp but not cold air, and festive Halloween, but as we approach November we enter what I call the “Grey Zone”. The skies are usually cloudy and dark, it’s often raining, and the constant wind makes everything at least 500 degrees colder. These conditions can make it difficult to enjoy what’s left of fall, and most activities on fall bucket lists like going to a pumpkin patch or going for a hike become near impossible to do. If you missed out on the outdoor fun of fall, but you still want to enjoy what’s left of the season, read on for some fun fall things you can do even if it’s gloomy outside.

1. Bake some festive treats

Sometimes the Band-Aid for a bad day comes in the form of a sugary treat. It doesn’t fix all your problems, and it shouldn’t be a constant go-to, but it can be just enough sweetness to cheer you up and brighten up a grey day. So  why not make your own? Consider pumpkin shaped cookies, a traditional apple or pumpkin pie, or just go with a classic chocolate chip cookie or brownies. Not the best baker? That’s okay, you can mix up tons of different treats with boxed or bagged mix that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!

2. Watch spooky movies

Do you like scary movies? Looking for something scarier than midterm exams and student loans?  If this is you, maybe watch a classic horror movie like The Conjuring or try something more recent like A Quiet Place. Pop some corn, grab some snacks (your fall themed cookies, perhaps?), and spend an evening willingly giving yourself nightmares. Too scared to watch by yourself? Pro tip: invite some friends over for a scary movie marathon!

3. Start a new book

Want to go somewhere, but this weather is stopping you? With a book, you can travel somewhere new without setting foot outside. Stay in and curl up with a warm blanket, a cup of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate and a new story, or an old favourite if you’re feeling a little nostalgic. If reading isn’t your thing, or if your eyes are just tired from reading textbooks and notes, try an audiobook of your favourite novel and take a break from work and studying.

4. Find a new favourite sweater

One of the best things about fall is being able to put on your coziest sweaters, scarves, and boots again for the first time in months, and as it gets colder, the more layers you need! Treat yourself to a little retail therapy and go searching for a new sweater to keep warm in this chilly weather. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, try thrift stores, or swap clothes with friends! You’ll save money and you both get something “new” to wear.

5. Enjoy your favourite hot drinks

One of the best ways to unwind after a long day is to relax with a hot drink. Take advantage of the near-freezing temperatures of late fall and enjoy a cup of your favourite tea or coffee, indulge in some hot chocolate, or try something new! Maybe you normally have a hot chocolate or a Double Double at Tim’s, but why not give the infamous Pumpkin Spice Latté a try?

As fall comes to an end, the grey weather may leave you feeling a little gloomy, but hopefully doing one or more of these things can help keep your spirits up as the temperatures dip low!
