10 Food Items Every College Student Needs in Their Kitchen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

So you moved into your first college apartment. Your parents stocked you up on instant noodles and stuff to make some sandwiches, but what else do you need?

Over the years I have come up with a list of some not so obvious food items that have been so helpful to have around the kitchen. Here are my top 10 food items everyone absolutely needs to keep in their college apartment:

1. Syrup

So you keep around the bulk size pancake mix at all times, but do you have syrup? Nothing is more sad than making a delicious stack of pancakes in the morning only to find out you have no syrup. I’m being serious. Literally nothing is more sad.

2. Tortillas

Quesadillas, wraps, you name it. I always find myself in need of a tortilla or two. It’s also great for switching up those boring leftovers. Just throw them in a tortilla for an entirely different meal.

3. Hummus

Whether you’re in the mood for a healthy snack, or need something filling, hummus will always be there for you. It’s super high in protein and tastes absolutely amazing as a dip or on a sandwich for a quick and easy meal.

4. Olive Oil

This one is pretty self explanatory. If you have ever cooked before you know olive oil is a key ingredient in so many recipes. Even if you don’t roast or sautee that often, any cooking oil is good to have around.

5. Ketchup

For your french fries, for your burgers, for everything.

6. Eggs

It seems as if every recipe ever involves eggs only when you don’t have them in the fridge. They are great to keep around in case you need to bake a cake, or whip up some breakfast.

7. Popcorn

What’s the point in having a movie night if you don’t have popcorn?

8. Indomie Mi Goreng

This is not your basic ramen. If you have never tried Mi Goreng before, you need to. It’s intense in flavor, and perfect for a quick savory dinner. Also they are insanely cheap, so stocking up for the year won’t hurt your wallet.

9. Coffee Creamer

If you drink coffee every morning like me, it’s important to never ever run out of creamer. Brewing coffee and finding out you don’t have any creamer left is almost as sad as running out of syrup when you made pancakes. Almost.

10. Belvita Breakfast Biscuits

Belvita has truly changed my life. The breakfast biscuits are insanely delicious and super filling. It’s the perfect thing to grab when sprinting out the door for that 9 a.m. class. I highly suggest the blueberry flavor. It’s like a blueberry muffin had a child with a delicious cookie and I’m so here for it.

Just a funky lil girl trying to put my thoughts into relatable words!!! I've had the dream of being Anne Hathaway's character in Devil Wears Prada since I was like three. Maybe without being someone's bitch, but you know, everyone has to start somewhere.
