Dorm Décor for The Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Halloween is over — which means it’s officially the start of the holiday season.

Being away at college, it can be difficult to make your shoebox-of-a-dorm feel like home, especially during this time of year. Lucky for you, we’ve come up with a few holiday décor ideas to help make your little home away from home feel a little more cozy and festive this season!

1. String Lights

If you don’t own string lights, are you even in college? String lights are a staple for any typical dorm décor, but they are especially perfect to decorate for the holidays. Take a break from those ugly, fluorescent dorm lights — they aren’t doing anyone any favors — and use string lights to create a cozy and festive atmosphere.

2. Garlands

Garlands come in all types of shapes, sizes and colors, making it an essential for any dorm room. Whether you opt for green vines or just a simple string with some ornaments or tassels, these make a great décor piece. If you’re on a budget like the rest of us college students, try DIY-ing your own garland with materials from a craft store!

3. Festive Blankets/Throw Pillows

Another great way to make your dorm feel a little cozier during these cold months is with festive throw pillows or blankets. These statement pieces will be sure to bring in an essential holiday feel to your room, and maybe it’ll feel a little less like a residence hall. Maybe.

4. Flameless Candles

Candles are, hands down, the best way to make a space cozier. But since open flames are not permitted in most dorms (rude), flameless candles will have to do the trick. They still give off the warm vibe that real candles do, just without those heavenly holiday scents. Maybe try turning them on and adding your favorite room spray at the same time. It’s like the same thing, right?

Like I said before, decorating for the holidays in those dull, lackluster dorm rooms is no easy task.

But, put on some Mariah Carey Christmas music, throw on your fuzzy socks and try out some of these decoration ideas. Just because you live in a dorm, doesn’t mean you have to be a scrooge.
