Three Tips to Prepare for Finals Week

By Shelynn Handy

Every college student knows that Thanksgiving break means finals week is coming soon after. It goes from turkeys to textbooks real fast and sometimes we can be a little unprepared. Here are three tips to help you get ready for finals week:

  1. Map out your time.  Basically, just plan, plan, and plan some more. Figure out how many finals you have and what days you need to take them and schedule your study time accordingly. Give yourself enough time to know the material for each exam, especially if you might need more time to study for some than others.
  2. Study in a group. I’m personally not a big fan of study groups, but I know they are helpful for a lot of people. Sometimes a classmate might be able to explain a concept in a way that you understand better than how it was explained during lecture.
  3. Get some rest. All night cram sessions are not the answer. Lack of sleep is like short-circuiting your brain when you need it the most. You need sleep for your brain to operate at it’s finest. Also, sometimes “sleeping on” a concept can help your brain make some connections that you couldn’t make while you were sleep deprived.

I know some of these seem like obvious things to do during finals week, but I know firsthand that the anxiety from wanting to do well on every exam can cloud your judgement. So hopefully in the chaos of getting ready for finals you remember these things.
