This coming week, the Associated Student Body (ASB) is giving back to our University in the spirit of Thanksgiving. ASB has made a community service project called Adopt-a-Basket. Adopt-a-Basket is an annual event that ASB holds where they put together boxes of non-perishable foods and canned goods for some of the low income staff members here at the University. There are many different way you can get involved in this service.

One way to get involved in this service this Thanksgiving is to purchase the items yourself for the basket and donate them to ASB. Each basket contains:

  • 2 large cans corn

  • 2 large cans green beans

  • 2 cans chicken broth

  • 1 can cranberry sauce

  • 1 bag rolls

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes

  • 3 pounds white potatoes

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

  • 5 pounds sugar

  • 5 pounds corn meal

  • 1 large onion

  • 1 bunch of celery

Another way to get involved in this service is to help put together these baskets. Today during my EDHE class, I volunteered to help make these baskets. All the goods were stored in boxes, so my class worked to put together fourteen baskets to go to our staff members here at the University this Thanksgiving.

Also, people who want to volunteer and get involved in this can help collect and load the baskets for delivery. There will be over 400 baskets to be loaded and delivered this week. This is an overall very rewarding experience to give back to the staff and the University this Thanksgiving. It always makes me feel good to know that I played a part in someone having a Thanksgiving meal this holiday.
