5 Fun Family & Friends Activities for Thanksgiving Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Thanksgiving break means different things for different people, as many travel home for the break, while some travel to other places, and others do not leave campus at all. It can be a much-needed break, or can be stressful if you’re managing work due afterward, time with family and friends, or time for yourself.

If you’re traveling home this Thanksgiving break, here are some activities, besides just Thanksgiving dinner (or Friendsgiving), to make fun use of your time.

1. See a movie

Lots of movies come out on Thanksgiving, so if you feel so inclined after your family meal, gather your cousins, your parents, or friends and head to the nearest movie theater. It’s a pretty basic activity, but it may be a long time since you’ve seen a movie in a movie theater.

2. Go Black Friday shopping

The lines may be long and the competition may be fierce, but going Black Friday shopping can be incredibly fun, and you can get some incredible deals (important for college kids), or score even more if a parent pays for your discounted purchases. If you don’t want to buy, watching the craze of other shoppers can be equally as fun.

3. Go apple picking

It may be a bit late in the season depending on where you live, but apple picking feels fun and fall festive, and can be as big a group of people as you like. If you go with friends, it can turn into a full autumnal photo shoot, or with family, an apple pie making party later.

4. Get manicures or pedicures

This gives you some guaranteed relaxation time, but can include others within that time, as well. Going with cousins or friends can be great, but asking your mother or another close adult might just make their day while you’re home for break, and give you some bonding time with them.

5. Set up your Christmas tree

If you’re feeling really festive, setting up your Christmas tree just before you leave with family may be the move. It gives the family members who miss you most a reminder that you will be home soon, and if you’ve been feeling homesick, reminds you, too.
