‘Tis the Season for Childhood Joys and French Toast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

Eggnog French toast never fails to bring back nostalgia and fond memories of the holiday season. It takes me back to the chilly mornings when my older sister would wake me up from deep slumber and cheerfully ask if I would like to make French toast with her. My eyes would light up and the two of us would race to the kitchen. As she grabbed the pumpkin eggnog out of the fridge, I unwrapped a bag of Texas styled toast. After dusting the eggnog with a hint of cinnamon, we would soak each side of the toast with the creamy mixture. We would then shave off a bit of butter and toss it in a hot skillet. The butter would brown and bring a heavenly smell into the kitchen. As we carefully lifted the toast out of the eggnog and into the skillet, she would play her favorite Christmas album by Michael Buble. As the two of us danced around the kitchen, the eggnog French toast crisped up along the crust and formed a hot, creamy filling in the center. It was a Christmas served hot on a plate!

As I grew older, my sister left for college, then moved to Utah, and eventually settled in San Francisco. Although we are now a six-hour drive apart, I’m still reminded of these childhood joys whenever I find myself pushing a cart through the dairy section at Ralphs. These days, I find joy in making eggnog French toast for the people I love, the same way my sister cooked it for me. Here is the simple recipe for Eggnog French Toast!

Ingredients

2 cups Pumpkin Eggnog

½ teaspoon cinnamon

4 slices Texas, thick-sliced toast

Butter to coat the skillet

Instructions

1. Pour the eggnog into a wide bowl or container.

2. Sprinkle cinnamon and any other spices you wish to put into the eggnog, and lightly whisk the mixture with a fork.

3. Take out a slice of toast and soak each side in the mixture for 30-40 seconds.

4. Turn on the stove to medium heat. Heat up the skillet and toss a bit of butter to coat the surface.

5. Gently place the soaked toast into the skillet and cook each side until it’s golden brown. This will take approximately four minutes on each side.

6. If you wish to add toppings, I would suggest cranberry sauce, raspberry jam, maple syrup, chocolate chips or fresh fruit.

Enjoy and have a wonderful holiday season!
