5 Cruelty-Free Makeup and Skincare Brands You Must Know About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Last week I suggested making a change in your daily beauty routine by switching to cruelty-free products. This week, I’ll be sharing a few of my personal favorite cruelty-free makeup and skincare products and reasons why you should definitely be adding them to your collection.

These companies are all certified cruelty-free and part of what makes them stand out is their innovative and eye-catching branding. Let’s start with the brand everyone’s been raging about.

1. GLOSSIER

If you haven’t heard of Glossier yet, I don’t know where you’ve been. This brand was launched in 2014 and has now skyrocketed in popularity across the globe. Their philosophy is “skin first, makeup second”; striving for a natural no-makeup makeup kind of look for those who aren’t into a full-face. One of the obvious reasons for all the love this brand has received is because of their attractive packaging and unique aesthetic. Their website itself is beautiful, and the main color they focus on is a dreamy “millennial pink.” Glossier is being used by any and every person out there, from grandmas to husbands. Their products are simple, yet perfectly formulated to give the most natural glow that starts with you. A few of my favorite products include their milky jelly face cleanser, the haloscope highlighter, balm dot com and stretch concealer.

“Our products reflect our belief that beauty should be fun, easy, imperfect, and personal. Our formulas are designed to live with you, not on you, and enhance what you already have. They are meant to be touched, smooshed, traveled with, cherished, and shared until their packages are crinkly and dirty and can literally give no more. They represent fun and freedom, and are the result of years of recommendations from the coolest girls on the planet.” — Glossier

On a side note, if you are ever passing through New York, they have the most beautiful two-story flagship store you may ever witness!

2.  OHII BEAUTY

Next we have a brand new company called Ohii (can a brand name get any cuter?). Ohii is sold only at Urban Outfitters and online since they just launched a couple of months ago. I was immediately drawn to their packaging, which features light pastel colors and simple text. They have both skincare and makeup products, including deodorant, a wake-up eye pen and lovely scented lip balms. Their description for the company is:

This is feel-good beauty.

Beauty for everyone.

Beauty that’s just fun.

Plus it’s pretty affordable. When I tested some in person, I loved the way the products felt to the touch. Their packaging has a smooth matte texture that’s just fun to hold. I’m looking forward to seeing how Ohii expands and what new products they may launch!

3.  LUSH COSMETICS

Lush is one of those stores you can smell from a mile away. They have giant chunks of freshly made soap and hundreds of bath bombs lining the walls. Lush is one of the most well-known brands that seriously fights against animal testing and promotes fresh, 100% natural and naked products (naked as in many of their products don’t have any excess packaging!).

“For decades, we’ve been fighting against animal testing. We actively choose ingredients from companies that don’t commission tests on animals and when we develop new products, we only test them on human volunteers.” — Lush

They’ve even awarded a Lush prize to researchers and scientists in order for them to continue their work developing new animal-free tests. *applause all around*

If you want to smell like the most fragrant forest fairy or a magical unicorn, Lush is the place for you. Their lotions and body butters melt into your skin, and their bath bombs will create an out of this world galactic experience in your bathtub. What’s not to love?

4. MILK MAKEUP

Milk Makeup is one of the coolest new brands I’ve come across. First of all, look at that shade range. This is what all beauty brands should be doing. We come in all shades and tones, and there should be makeup that suits any skin color. They celebrate makeup for anyone, and really push for inclusivity.

Their makeup gives you a lot of freedom. You can create a perfect studio look or keep it simple and fresh. They even have a highlighter made out of actual meteorites! My favorite product is their flex concealer; I’ve never had a concealer that blended out so fluidly and actually concealed so well before in my life!

Milk is “clean, cool beauty.”

5.  FIRST AID BEAUTY

Last but not least is First Aid Beauty, also known as FAB. Their primary focus is skincare that works for any and all skin types. “At First Aid Beauty, we provide everyday essentials and targeted skincare solutions that deliver immediate relief, lasting results and feel-good textures.” Their ultra repair cream is perfect for those with sensitive, dry or eczema-prone skin. I use their coconut moisturizing primer and tinted moisturizer every day, which gives me a nice medium coverage that feels super hydrating on the skin, truly recommend!

I hope that at least one of these cruelty-free beauty options sparked your interest enough to go out and try them for yourself! If not, there are hundreds of other companies out there you can choose from that will suit your beauty needs.
