Stay Safe on Campus With These Must-Have Products

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

In our current political and social climate — or on a college campus — it’s sometimes easy to feel unsafe. We can’t control those around us, but we can take precautions to make sure we are protected and making the safest decisions.

The brand SABRE offers an array of products that give you confidence in your safety and help you to stay protected against even the most unexpected events. As women on a college campus of around 52,000 people, it’s crucial to practice safe habits and choose products that will help us defend ourselves when we need it most.

Here are some products created by SABRE that could make all the difference.

1. Personal Alarm with Key Ring

SABRE’s Personal Alarm with Key Ring has a sleek and compact design, which allows it to fit easily on your keychain, backpack or purse. The Personal Alarm has a 120dB alarm that’s audible up to 600 ft away. The alarm is super easy to use, just simply pull the pin to sound the alarm and push it back in to stop the sound and use again. There are multiple versions of the alarm that benefit various causes. The pink version benefits the National Breast Cancer (with over $1.4 million already raised-YES) and the red version benefits the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. This alarm can easily fit with your dorm or apartment keys and can be easily accessible at any time. The benefit of this alarm is that it will not stop until the pin is placed back in and will likely scare off the predator. Most predators are looking for an easy target and will give up if you put up any kind of fight.

2. Personal Alarm with Clip and LED Light

SABRE’s Personal Alarm with Clip & LED Light is a convenient alarm to take out running or when walking at night. The LED flashlight has three settings: on, slow flash and fast flash modes that make sure you’re visible in all light conditions. You can clip it to clothing, your bag, waistband which makes the alarm very accessible and effective, you don’t have to worry about fumbling for the alarm or having to carry it in your hands. To top it off, the alarm even has a Weather Proof Design. Whether you’re walking home from a meeting or a long day of classes, make sure you have your alarm on you just in case you encounter someone who either tries to assault or force you to go with them or into their vehicle. UF also has various blue lights around campus that will immediately notify the authorities if pressed.

3. Drink Test Kit

SABRE’s Drink Test Kit has user friendly drink test strips that can test for GHB and Ketamine in alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. Drug-facilitated sexual assault is commonly known as “Date Rape,” and occurs when illicit drugs are slipped into an unsuspecting victim’s drink. These colorless, odorless and tasteless drugs were impossible to detect until now. These strips are very simple to use and come in a compact design and size that can easily fit into your wallet. To use, you simply place a drop of your drink on both dots of one test. There is a pink and green dot for GHB and Ketamine. Smear the drop gently and wait until it dries. If either spot turns a darker blue color, then it is possible a date rape drug has been detected and you should seek help immediately. It is appalling that there is even a market for this product, you can never trust your drink while you’re out at a party in college. A lot of the drinks at college parties can so easily be tampered with, make sure to never leave your drink unattended, and make sure to always know where your drink came from.

These are just a few products that are perfectly tailored to keep college students safe. I personally carry my light blue SABRE Pepper Spray with my wherever I go. Above all else, though, please take that extra step in ensuring you’re safe. Avoid walking alone at night at all costs, but if you absolutely have to make sure you have your cellphone, pepper spray or alarm handy. You never know when you’ll need to defend yourself, and you don’t want to take that chance.

When you’re partying, never let you drink leave your hands, and don’t surround yourself with people you can’t trust. That’s easier said than done, because usually it’s the people we trust who end up taking advantage. When in doubt, use your best judgment and have a good time with the people you love and trust. I’m not saying don’t go wild, these are your years to do it girl, but be as safe as you can.
