A Floridian’s Guide to the Winter Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Florida is a unique state. While people across the country envy Floridians for easy access to pristine beaches, warm weather year-round and the fact that we seem to have an endless amount of theme parks in our backyard, there always seems to be something missing. Without the cooler weather that makes the leaves change color in the fall or frost gathered on your car windshield, it’s a bit harder to get in the winter spirit.

As you watch news stories of snow touching the ground for the first time in other states, you may think all hope is lost. Fear not, however, because there are a lot of ways to bring the winter season to the sunshine state.

Here are a few you should try.

Freshen Up Your Winter Wardrobe

There are a ton of techniques for layering that don’t include wearing Ugg boots or a winter coat in 70-degree weather. Try investing in lightweight sweaters and cardigans to fill your wardrobe and a few go-to winter scarves!

Another great way to get in the holiday spirit is to go shopping for a new makeup palette, with warm hues reflecting the changing season or tones with glitter that help you embrace your festive mood.

Some of this year’s fun holiday palettes include Anastasia Beverly Hills‘ “Sultry” eyeshadow palette and Too Faced’s “Ginger Bread” eyeshadow palette.

But if you’re a lip color lover, Kylie Cosmetics just released a brand new holiday collection lip line called “Chill Baby” as well as an eyeshadow palette called “Baby it’s Cold Outside” – definitely a must for your Christmas wish list!

Have a Bonfire

There’s one thing that it’s never too hot for even during our winter— a bonfire. Whether it’s on the beach or in the backyard, a great way to gather your friends and enjoy the season is by using your Boy Scouts skills and roasting some marshmallows! One of my personal s’more tricks is to pair your marshmallows with Keebler Fudge Stripe cookies instead of graham crackers and chocolate, that way there’s little to no melted chocolate and a new twist to your traditional winter treat!

Purchase a Christmas Tree

The best way to make the inside of your home feel like Christmas is with a fresh pine tree! The classic scent will fill your home quickly and keep you in good spirits. Many stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot provide quality, reasonably priced trees that will no doubt add the holiday touch that your home needs! Pair that with some lights, decorated stockings with you and your roommates’ names on it and a homemade gingerbread house and you’ll be all set!

Watch Your Favorite Christmas Movies

After your tree is up, cozy up with a cup of hot cocoa and watch some of your favorite childhood holiday flicks. Maybe it’s Elf with Will Ferrell, Home Alone or The Polar Express—either way, they’re guaranteed to get you in that holiday and winter spirit!

If you’re looking for something new to watch on Netflix, just take a look at these new holiday additions:
