Member of the Month: Anna Engleson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carthage chapter.

Ever since she joined the Her Campus at Carthage writing staff, freshman Anna Engleson has brought a bubbly energy to everything she’s done. Whether you have the opportunity to meet her in person or you simply read her articles, you can tell how energetic she is and how passionate she can get about the things she loves – makeup included. So we just knew that when it was time for Anna to be our Member of the Month, we had to do a Makeup Monday Giveaway in her honor. But, without further ado, meet one of HCC’s newest writers!

HC: What are you studying at Carthage?

AE: I’m a Psychology major with a Women and Gender Studies minor.

HC: What made you decide to attend Carthage?

AE: As cheesy as it may sound, it felt like home when I came here. It’s the perfect size, both in physical space and student population. It just is where I felt I had to be.

HC: What made you join Her Campus at Carthage?

AE: My friend Laura (who is an article writer for Her Campus at Gustavus) told me about Her Campus when she left for college, and I thought it sounded awesome! I was so excited to find out that we had a chapter at Carthage and I signed up almost immediately.

HC: What first piqued your fascination with makeup?

AE: I got into makeup a few years ago when I got my first makeup set for Christmas. I always loved the bold looks of celebrities and rock stars, so when I got my hands on some makeup of my own I went at it. I started doing cut creases, smokey eyes, ombre lips, fake freckles – anything and everything I could do to transform my face.

HC: What are some of your favorite looks?

AE: Some of my favorite looks I’ve done in the past are probably my sunflower look and my drag look. The sunflower took almost two hours and a lot of yellow. People seemed to really get a kick out of it. My drag persona Luke Warm is also a classic – I find it so fun to pop on a mustache and contour my face to increase my masculinity.

I don’t have any one artist in particular that I use for inspiration, but I’m always on YouTube and Pinterest looking for new ideas.

HC: Do you have any tips for makeup novices?

AE: Of course! First of all, you don’t need the expensive stuff to be good at makeup. Drugstore is equal, if not better, quality to some of the big names out there. And if you’re looking for color, ColourPop, NYX, BH Cosmetics and so many other affordable brands have amazing pigmentation. Just do your research first! My second tip is one I really hold close to my heart: Don’t worry about what others think. If you think doing a makeup look will make you look bomb af, then do it! Who cares if it’s bizarre or a little weird? It’s your face, so rock it.

HC: What do you want to do after you graduate?

AE: I hope to one day become a therapist for LGBT+ youth. I realize that’s a while away, but I know that even if I don’t end up on that path, I want to make the world a better place.

While our freshman has some high hopes for her future, we know she’ll be extraordinary.

Jane Eckles

Carthage '19

Jane graduated from Carthage College in May 2019 with a degree in English and Secondary Education. She is from Merced, California, which is close enough to San Fransisco for her to confirm that the City by the Bay is her absolute favorite. When she's not teaching or writing articles, she can be found collecting any book she can get her hands on, watching Netflix, staring mindlessly into the void, or napping.
