Are College Students Responsible Pet Owners?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Every college student dreams of becoming a pet owner; but, the real question is, do college students have the time, expenses and space for a pet right now? Some people would tell you that college students make perfect pet owners. But some students would tell you otherwise.

Animals are just like humans in that they, too, need to get outside and get some Vitamin D. Depending on the size of the animal, it needs to be walked daily. When animals are cooped up inside all day, it takes a toll on their emotional health.

When adopting a pet, many people overlook the price of food. Let me tell you, dog food is EXPENSIVE. While you might be able to live off of Ramen Noodles with your college budget, your furry friend cannot. You need to budget your money so that they will have plenty of food.

In a college town, many students live in apartments. These apartments can get tight when you bring an animal into the picture. Also, most apartments do not have a yard for your pet to run around in.

Before adopting a pet, you need to do your research. You need to make a plan and think about all of the animals needs. I know it can be hard to do this when the animals are so cute, but you don’t want to get yourself in a bind.

If college students truly want to adopt a pet, they will find the expenses, time and space for the animal. The most important aspect to keep in mind is the well being of the animal. Adoption after college is always an option for those who are unsure if it is the right time.
