Last Sunday, Megan Mullally hosted the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on TNT and TBS. The SAG Awards is a unique stop on the award season trail because it is the only televised awards show to solely honor the performers. There are thirteen awards presented that focus on both individual and full ensemble performances. They’re so actor-obsessed that even the trophy is simply named “The Actor”. Here is my recap of can’t-miss moments:
Emily Blunt made her hubby tear up
Emily Blunt took home the Actor for best female actor in a supporting role for her performance alongside her real-life husband, John Krasinski, in the movie “A Quiet Place”. The film was also directed by John Krasinski, creating a unique experience for both actors. In addition to sharing the screen, Blunt declared, “I’m going to share this completely with my husband John Krasinski because this entire experience of doing this with you has completely pierced my heart directly.” Krasinski’s eyes began to water and she continued, “You are a stunning filmmaker. I’m so lucky to be with you and to have done this film with you,” making them my official fav couple of 2019.
Blunt’s heartfelt acceptance speech ended by thanking Krasinski for giving her the part, jokingly adding, “you’d have been in major trouble if you hadn’t.” Talk about goals!

Black Panther won big
Audiences were pleasantly surprised when the cast of “Black Panther” received the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble [cast] in a motion picture, but not as surprised as the film’s star, Chadwick Boseman, who admitted at the start of his speech, “I didn’t think I was going to have to speak.” Despite the initial shock, Boseman gave an inspiring speech about the importance of representation and what it is like ‘to be young, gifted, and black’ in the industry. The speech was so good that they couldn’t even cut him off with the wrap-it-up music.
“We knew we had something special that we wanted to give the world. That we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing and that we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see,” Boseman’s eyes beamed over the crowd, “If you get to experience that, you will be a fulfilled artist.”

Geoffery Owens reminded us exactly who he is
Geoffery Owens made a name for himself many years ago as Elvin Tibideaux on “The Cosby Show”. Since then, he has made appearances in other shows like “That’s so Raven” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. A couple months ago, some pictures of Owens working a day job at his local Trader Joe’s were reported by The Daily Mail and framed in an unfortunate spout of job shaming.
The reaction, however, was overwhelmingly positive. The pictures were able to show how even actors can struggle between jobs. Soon, many other celebrities began sharing their side-job stories and commending Owens for not abandoning his craft, even in hard times. The publicity even created an opportunity for Owens: Tyler Perry offered him a ten-episode role in his OWN series, “The Haves and the Have Nots”.
During the introduction of the award show, Owens was given the chance to address the public saying, “So, somewhere in the middle of the road of my life, I found myself in the dark wood of unemployment and debt.” Owens said. “But instead of switching careers like a sane person, I took a job at a local Trader Joe’s to see if I could hang in there with my career. And, um, it’s actually worked out pretty well. I’m Geoffrey Owens and I am an actor.”

Patricia got political
Many actors and actresses have used award speeches to deliver important messages on social justice, and Patricia Arquette seized her opportunity at the SAG Awards and did not waste any time. She won the Actor for best actress in a TV movie or limited series for her performance in “Escape at Dannemora”.
After thanking those close to her personally and professionally, she had–as she put it–“one order of business.” Arquette explained that there is a problem in the current film industry with some production companies not paying actors for their overtime. Her advice was for actors to keep close track of their working hours and call-in times, and demand they are fairly paid.
Arquette then ended her speech by thanking “Robert Mueller and everyone working to make sure that we have sovereignty for the United States of America.”

Sandra Oh proved even stars need support
You know that feeling when the pretty, popular girl gives you a compliment and in an instant your entire existence feels validated? Well, apparently that feeling has carried Sandra Oh through her entire career.
Oh’s acceptance speech for being named best female actor in a drama series (“Killing Eve”) was completely dedicated to her fellow actors and the kind and encouraging words they’ve given her over the years. She started by recalling an important moment in her life, “In 1977, Alfre Woodard whispered in my ear, ‘I’m so proud of you out there. We fight the same fight.’” It just goes to show how important words are, and how they can touch the lives of those around us.
