How to Take Advantage of the Cold Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

With the weather being as cold as it is, there is nothing better than having a valid excuse to stay in bed. Wrap yourself in a ton of blankets and forget about the world that exists outside your room. Winter is the only time you can fall off the face of the earth — I mean, that’s what everyone else is doing.

How do you really get the snow to work in your favour? For one, you can do a movie marathon. Whether it be Disney movies or horror movies, pick a good line up and don’t leave the couch.

Grab a bunch of blankets (maybe build a fort), pick a cozy spot and don’t move. No winter day is complete without some hot cocoa. Whether you make it with water or milk, no one can resist hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day.

Don’t feel like watching movies? Use the weather as an excuse to do everything you never got a chance to do; those DIY’s you’ve been dying to try — or that Harry Potter fan fiction you wanted to write! Anything you had on your mind, you can do! You can even do it in a cute sweater. Winter is the best time of the year to wear all those cute sweaters you have at the back of you closet. You could even wear the ugly ones you got for Christmas — I mean, no one is seeing them anyways!

But there are fun things to do outside if you’re brave enough to face the cold.

Truly taking advantage of the wintery weather would be to embrace it (if you’re Canadian enough). There is plenty of things you can do exclusively during the winter. For one, taking a nice walk outside (that is if it isn’t 20 degrees below). Get a group of friends, build snow forts and have a giant snowball fight. Nothing is more fun than shoving snow in your friend’s face, am I right?

This is also the only time of year you can go skiing or snowing boarding. Yet another activity you can do with a group of friends. Find it too far or expensive? You have the best alternative — tobogganing. You don’t even really need a sled, any flat surface will do. Grab a cardboard box, find a hill and have yourself a good time. Again, I wouldn’t recommend any of this if it is too cold outside.

Just remember, it is better to take advantage of the winter before you miss it in the summer!
