Feburary is here again (somehow!), and it’s time to celebrate Black History Month! There are so many ways to celebrate culture and the rich history of it. One of my favorite ways is to read! Although there are a million books you could choose to celebrate and learn this Feburary, here are a few to start with!

1. One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia

This incredibly adorable read follows three young sisters who travel to Oakland to meet their mother. The short novel, set in 1968, explores several different themes, including family, race, and age in the 60’s. It’s a short, heart-warming tale of community and love.

2. The Help by Kathryn Stockett

If you haven’t read The Help… honestly, what are you doing with your life?! Published in 2009 and made into a movie shortly after, it is set in the early 1960’s south. Three women come together and do some incredible things. Need anything else?

Stockett’s brilliant novel captivates the reader within the first few pages. The author explores everything from family dynamics to race relations. Although the book seems lengthy, it flows beautifully, and will be over before you know it.

3. Becoming by Michelle Obama

Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s memoir, Becoming, was published this past November and overtook bookstore displays for weeks. Mrs. Obama reflects on her life–the events and experiences that shaped her– and inspires the reader to defy expectations, no matter the cost. Friends who have read the memoir have said they “feel like Michelle’s best friend.” What more could you want from a book?

Have you read any of these books? Which ones interested you the most? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy reading!
