Today is an extremely important day. Arguably more important than tomorrow. You heard me. More important than Valentine’s Day… because today is Galentine’s Day!

For those of you who may be unaware, Galentine’s Day is an unofficial holiday inspired by Leslie Knope, the overspirited leader in the comedy show Parks and Rec. Here is her explanation: “What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best holiday of the year. Every February 13th, my ladies friends and I leave our husbands and boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

I’m not trying to bash the OG holiday by claiming the day before it is better, but there’s one indisputable fact that makes me believe the usually unlucky 13 is better than 14: Valentine’s Day isn’t celebrated by the masses. It’s a great time to show your family, friends, and potential significant other how much you care. However, there are lots of single people in the world who view February 14th as just another Thursday.

Galentine’s Day is sacred because all women have other women to admire, appreciate, and recognize. Leslie Knope’s inspired every woman out there to be grateful for their friends one day a year. Growing up, my Mom always told me, “boyfriends come and go but friends and family are forever.”

We’ve got Christmas and Thanksgiving for our family. Why not celebrate our friends on Galentine’s? Do it big today ladies.
