Utility, But Make it Fashion

By Shelynn Handy

If someone told me in 2016 that we would all be wearing utility as fashion in 2019, I’d think it was a joke. Yet here we are, and utility style clothing is bigger than ever.

But what exactly is utility clothing? You can define utility clothing as any casual clothing that was intended for a specific activity for functionality. For example, overalls for farming would be consider a utility clothing item. Now you can see folks wearing overalls and plumber style jumpsuits on any given day for any occasion. The utility trend can also be seen with items such as the fanny pack, and cargo pants.

The best way to wear utility without looking like you’re going to unclog a drain is to:

  1. Accessorize. Belting a jumpsuit at the waist makes the look a bit more interesting.
  2. Go for color. Try to pick colors that aren’t typical for the original style, like cargo pants in red or a plain jumpsuit in light green. Just please…anything but navy blue.
